Drink Chia announced this month that they are expanding the distribution of their beverage range throughout Florida, the Northeast, and the Midwest. New partnerships have been formed with The United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) and KeHE Food Distributors, two of the biggest natural food distributors in the natural market and supermarket channels within the US.
Since its launch in March 2012, Drink Chia has experienced promising growth and steadily expanded distribution within the natural channel in the US. Available in Strawberry Citrus, Honeysuckle Pear, Mango Tangerine, and “B Meyer” Lemon flavours, Drink Chia is marketed as an all-natural omega-3 superfood drink. Chia seed is said to be an excellent source of many other nutrients including magnesium, potassium, calcium and iron. Additionally, the chia seed is high in both protein and fibre.
Drink Chia have also commented that they are increasing the bottle size from 8 oz. to 10 oz. for all four flavour variants. There will be no additional cost to consumers with this size increase as the suggested retail price will remain at $3.49 per bottle. Drink Chia say that this larger bottle size means enhanced health benefits for consumers as it provides more of chia’s seeds important nutritional attributes. Furthermore, the calories and sugar content will be kept low. The Drink Chia formulation will contain just 50 calories and 5 grams of sugar per 10 oz. serving.
Chia seeds have become increasing popular in recent years in the US, their superfood status helping to raise their image. There are now a range of products on the market that contain chia seed and market associated health benefits. The majority of these tend to be bread, cracker and breakfast cereal type products. Thus, there are still significant opportunities for beverages, such as Drink Chai, to be developed that utlize the health benefits of the chia seed in innovative formulations.
