Current Web Trends – Cyber War
The current web trends are characterized by cyber wars, targeting technologically advanced companies and countries. In this trend, the weaker players hack into the systems of the technologically advanced players to cause damage of data or maliciously use the data. The hackers may use current technologies like the individuals’ operating systems and even hardware devices to spread malware and get access to the companies’ and states’ systems to cause sabotage.
In the recent years, the current web trends of infiltrative cyber war have placed the cyberspace of USA as a primary target for many countries. Recently, Chinese cyber war targeted the U.S industries and the government as argued by the Mandiant cyber security firm. These attacks are real threats to target industries and countries as their data and intelligence are at risk of espionage and sabotage. Russia has also managed to carry out a cyber attack on the CIA.
Current Web Trends of Cyber War are very difficult to deter since the culprits in most occasions are anonymous and it is always difficult to convey the deterring message. The ability to deter these attacks also depends on the defendant’s vulnerability and the ability to defend themselves in case of an eventuality. However, it is possible to achieve deterrence if all the avenues are considered including military retaliation, economic sanctions and others.
There have been attempts in the recent years to limit the Current Web Trends of Cyber War by binding treaties though the UN and ITU. This has been thwarted by disagreements on the terms of the treaty making it difficult for countries to ascend to the treaty. Therefore, favorable terms should be drafted in order to bring nations on board.
In the current web trends, cyber war is becoming an attractive field of battle and the technologically advanced nations at great risks of attack. Therefore, mechanisms should be put in place to protect industries and countries from cyber war. If this is not addressed, the current web trends continue to expose many to cyber attacks and cyberspace remains unsafe.
